A Double Header Home Win

There's never a greater sight that seeing both teams step onto the pitch at the same time, and yesterday provided just that as UYWRUFC took over the 22 Acres for an afternoon of great rugby. The 1st XV took on Sheffield Hallam as arguably the top contenders for top spot in the league, as the 2nd XV battled Northumbria 2's only a few paces away on the pitch across. It was a worrying start for the first team as Sheffield Hallam scored almost within moments of kick off, threatening the UYWRUFC 1sts winning record and making clear this would not be an easy ride for the squad. A quick chat under the posts, however, and York were back in form: a quick try from Liv at fullback brought the home team

Depression, Rugby and Me

Here’s something important to know about me: I’m mentally ill. I can’t talk around it because by nature it affects everything about my day to day life and personality. This is my reality. At one point last winter, I remember I had yet to make it out of bed by about 3pm. On some level I really wanted to keep up with the fitness the club recommended, but on another the idea of going to the gym involved so many steps and so much energy it seemed an insurmountable goal. My brain had also been playing a loop of self-hatred centred around the fact I’d missed training for the last week before term's end. UYWRUFC 1sts v Hull University (Cup Round 1)

Yesterday saw UYWRUFC 1st XV storm their way through the 1st round of the Northern Conference Cup with a 58-0 win over Hull University at York RUFC. Though a late start to the game, the winning began a few minutes in as Iggy stormed through Hull's defensive line to plant a try right under the posts. With a quick conversion to follow, York kicked the game off (pardon the pun) with an early start to the scoring. A cracking break from Alice Ingram on the wing a few minutes later had York flying down on the pitch; though Alice was caught just off the try line, a quick pop pass inside lead to Iggy's second try of the match and a 12-0 lead. A few interestingly "straight" lineouts and some messy ru

Barbaric Rugby

Anyone who loves rugby loves the Barbarians – the invitation-only side picks some of the best up-and-coming talent, as well as established players, from across the world to compete together against club, provincial and international teams. A BaaBaas match is always full of tries and fancy plays, and they’ll rarely ever kick a penalty – why do that when you can kick to the corner and get a try? Their philosophy of flair, passion and spirit is obvious, and is what has won the rugby world over in the last few decades. And now, the side that has showcased players like Jonah Lomu, Bryan Habana, Richie McCaw and Leigh Halfpenny (I just had to slip a Welsh player in there) has now launched a women’
