A Year as a UYWRUFC Fresher
With first year being so busy, the parties, societies, Netflix bingeing sessions, and all the endless
amounts of reading, one of the best things about my first year of university has been the York
Women’s Rugby Team. I would say they were probably among one of the most approachable teams at Fresher’s fair, and even more so at the first taster session, after which I immediately knew that this was the sports team I wanted to join at university.
I’ve been a part of women’s rugby at the University of York for a year now, and I’m currently playing as a scrum half, but had previously tried out a few other positions when I first started. I have found that playing with UYWRUFC has been particularly rewarding, because I wasn’t just turning up to training, or playing rugby because I enjoyed the sport alone, but because I really felt like I was getting to know the team and making some good friends, which of course motivated me to continue and has fuelled that passion I have for the game. In fact, some of the girls that I first met at training, who were also new Freshers, are now some of my closest friends at university. I also think that one of the biggest stereotypes of university sports teams is that they’re over-competitive, and that rugby is quite an aggressive sport geared for a specific type of person. However, I can honestly say that when I joined the team, I found myself training with those who I would say are some of the kindest, loveliest and most genuine individuals I know at university, yet are still exceptional rugby players. For me UYWRUFC is special in this sense, because both rugby as a sport, and the way our club is run, reflects an inclusive and diverse ethic. It's amazing the span of subjects, ages, and backgrounds our women reach – different personalities all round, yet
we still gel so well as a group!
I feel that members of this university team are not just valued on the pitch as players, but also as
friends who contribute to, and love their club, which is part of what makes it so great. At university
you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to activities and societies, but having finished my first year
with the University Women’s Rugby team, I feel that it has well been worth the time and one of the
best decisions I made all year. I can't wait to get back into the next season!
