July though it may be, it’s never too early to start looking towards the next season – and what a year UYWRUFC has coming up! The 2017/18 season marks the 40th anniversary of the club, and with celebrations to mark the occasion, it’ll be a year to watch both on and off the pitch. Preparation doesn’t wait until September, however, and the team is already in full swing getting ready for the next season.
Last year ended on a great high with an overwhelming success at the annual Roses varsity tournament: 41-0 to the first team and 48-0 to the seconds in their first appearance against Lancaster. On the back of such stellar performances the club swept the board during awards season, winning Club of the Year 2017 at the York Sport Union Colours Ball and our Fundraising and Sponsorship Officer Lottie Massey scooping up the Equal Opportunities Award for her work on a Domestic Abuse Policy for the University of York in partnership with IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services), in addition to her Love York Awards Campaign of the Year. Our coach also won Coach of the Year at the Love York Awards, as well as highly commended Coach of the Year at the Colours Ball. Further awards also included nominations and commendations for both Roses Team of the Year and BUCS Yorkshire Universities’ Great Team of the Year.
With a lot to build on going into the next season, both teams are hard at work in fitness and strength training over the summer all across the world in preparation for a great start to preseason. With the squad back together in September, and a brand new selection of captains to kick things off, everyone is keen to hit the ground running. Still time for sunshine amongst the gym sessions though – UYWRUFC stash has been out and about on travels from the towers of Prague to the mountains of Canada.
Over the summer, the club is also running a competition to find a new logo to help commemorate 40 years of the club. Not only will the winning design become the official emblem for the club but the winner will get discounted entry to our ticketed Presidents’ event, our big anniversary celebration! If you’ve a talent for team logos (or any artistic leanings), make sure you get your entries in before the 1st September.
With a big year to build on and an even bigger one to come, the excitement and news is bound to keep on coming. Watch this space for more rugby revels!
